Elaine N. Avery, President of WBASNY, is a graduate of New York Law School. Upon graduation from law school Elaine went into private practice with her father and she continued to practice with him until his untimely death in 1998. She continues the family practice and is a solo practitioner concentrating in the areas of Family and Matrimonial Law, No-Fault Arbitration and Collection Law. She is admitted to practice in the courts of the States of New York and New Jersey, the United States District Court, Eastern District, and the United States Supreme Court. Elaine became a member of WBASNY by joining the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association (the “BWBA”) in 1996 and in 1997 she was chosen to sit on the BWBA’s Board of Directors. She was nominated for the positions of Treasurer, Vice-President and President over the next three (3) years, respectively, and was the youngest person to serve as President of her chapter, a position she held for two years. In 2004 she was the recipient of the chapter’s highest award, the Sybil Hart Kooper Award. During her terms as BWBA President, Elaine became increasingly involved in the activities of WBASNY, culminating in her serving as President Elect the past year. Elaine has co-chaired WBASNY’s Pro-Bono Committee (1998-2000), Membership Committee (2000-2002) and Animals and the Law Committee (2000-2002), which she founded. She also served as a Co-Chair of the 25th Anniversary Planning Committee, as well as the Convention Committee for the past two years, and she sits on the Permanent Convention Committee. Elaine is proud to have been awarded WBASNY’s Outstanding New Lawyer Award in 1999. Elaine was also recently nominated to the Brooklyn Bar Association’s Board of Trustees and is a member of several other professional associations, including the New York State Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
