Dr. Callahan, started his pediatric experience in 1980 with a pediatric residency at the University of Connecticut. An interest in general pediatrics, led him to a small HMO in Poughkeepsie, New York. During his fourteen year stint there, he gained experience in clinical pediatrics, interpersonal relations and management forming a strong backbone for the rest of his career. Staff model HMOs were falling out of favor in the 1990’s. Dr. Callahan moved to a pediatric group practice in rural northeast Pennsylvania. Working in a small town allowed him to make a deeper connection to the community through relationships with patients and families. After six and a half years, an opportunity came to move closer to family in southern New England. This led to his present position at Pediatric Associates of Hampden County. Where he is still caring for children and helping families.

A licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist specializing in pain management and the treatment of chronic diseases, he listens closely to his patients in order find how to put their lives back in balance. He began learning Chinese medicine from masters in China in the 1960's. He spent over 40 years practicing acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. He completed apprenticeships with many famous Chinese herbalists in the ShanXi and HuNan provinces. He also studied at the Changchun College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and graduated from Southwest University in China formerly Chang Chun Traditional Chinese Medical School. He furthered his career with study and work at the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing, HenShan Hospital, Beijing Hu Guo Si Traditional Chinese Medical Hospital, and Beijing Therapeutic Massage Hospital.
